It’s that time of year again-can’t you feel it in the air? No, I’m not talking about the impending Hallmark Holiday, but rather the anticipation surrounding this year’s release of Bell’s Hopslam in bottles. For diehard hop fans this comes as no news, but for the uninitiated, prepare to be wowed by this tasty double IPA. Hopslam is brewed with six different hop varieties in the kettle along with a healthy portion of honey, and is later dry-hopped extensively with Simcoe hops. Contrary to popular belief, honey does not actually sweeten a beer, but actually dries out the brew and serves to boost alcohol content due to honey’s high fermentability. As such, Hopslam comes in at a smooth 10 percent alcohol, though you wouldn’t know it just by tasting it.

As Hopslam pours, you can’t help but notice the incredible hop aromas that burst from the glass-citrus, pine, pineapple, and grapefruit are a few that come to mind. The palate is smooth with piney-resiny flavors up front and citrus hops folded into light, bready, caramelly malt sweetness in the center. The finish is pretty bitter as you would expect from a double IPA, but exceptionally smooth and pleasant.

This beer is always highly anticipated and sells through quickly each year, so if you want to get some, make sure to keep your eyes peeled in the next week or so. The $15-$20 price tag per 6-pack may seem hefty, but I promise you that if you get it within a month of it hitting shelves, it’s more than worth it. I never intended to bookend this review with quips about Valentine’s Day, but hey-if that special someone in your life happens to be a hardcore hophead, you may have just found the perfect gift!

A seemingly unusual choice for a winter seasonal, Winter Skal comes to us from Capital Brewery located in Middleton, WI, less than 10 miles from Madison. True to Wisconsin’s Germanic roots, Capital is first and foremost a lager brewery. Their Brewmaster, Kirby Nelson, expresses his frustration at customers that come in looking for an IPA or a hop-bomb, and a quick look at their line-up reveals why. Though they do feature a couple of ales in their line-up, they offer mostly lagers, including 6 or 7 doppelbocks.

As is evidenced by the many other winter seasonals available, many breweries stick to the “Winter Warmer” theme and brew big and boozy beers for the holidays, usually with a handful of spices thrown in for good measure. Rather than choosing to brew another strong lager, Capital created Winter Skal, an easy drinking amber lager. Winter Skal is malt forward with notes of caramel, toasted biscuits, sweet cereal and butter toffee. The brew also features spicy Liberty hops which lend a pleasant floral-woody character to the finish. Kirby chuckles when asked what spices he used to brew this beer-there’s nothing but the four traditional ingredients (malt, hops, yeast, and water) here, and what most people interpret to be spices is in fact the Liberty hops.

Although it’s nothing to write home about, Winter Skal is a solid, easy-drinking lager and a nice change-up from the heavier beers of the season. Skal, which is Scandinavian for “Cheers”, embodies the spirit of this beer-which seems to be made for drinking in quantity with good company.

As Craft Brewing has taken off in the states, many brewers have made their mark developing unique beers that fall outside the bounds of traditional styles. However, another trend has been to look to brewing history in Europe and to reinvent previously well-established styles, giving them an American twist. Boulevard has done just that with Tank 7, their tasty interpretation of a Belgian Saison.

Historically, saisons (French for “Season”) were brewed in Southern Belgium as a thirst-quencher for the summer field workers (saisonniers). Today, they no longer fulfill this purpose, but retain many of the characteristics which made them aptly suited to the task. Saisons are typically highly carbonated wheat beers with spicy notes from yeast or actual spices and a higher hop presence than is observed in most other Belgian styles. The combination of slight acidity, high carbonation, and hop bitterness gives the beverage a refreshing edge-perfect for a hard day’s work in the summer heat.

With Tank 7, Boulevard pays homage to the Saison, but in true American fashion, with a high ABV (8.0%) and a wallop of American hop flavor and aroma. The aroma abounds with grapefruit hops, with lemony-herbal notes not far behind. White pepper and clove phenolics complete the mélange-it smells heavenly. The flavor follows the aroma, with hints of bubblegum and rose-like alcohols to complement the fruity-spicy character of the beer. With its varied flavor hooks, Tank 7 makes an excellent food beer at any time of year. Complex, elegant, and quite refreshing, Tank 7 is not a beer to be missed.
